Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on December 13, 2006, and ratified in Chile on September 17, 2008. Its objective is to promote, protect, and ensure the full enjoyment, on an equal basis, of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by all persons with disabilities, and to promote respect for their inherent dignity. Persons with disabilities include those with long-term physical, mental, intellectual, or sensory impairments that, when interacting with various barriers, may hinder their full and effective participation in society, on an equal basis with others.
Article 7 is specifically related to children with disabilities, establishing that State Parties will take all necessary measures to ensure that all children with disabilities enjoy fully and on an equal basis with other children all human rights and fundamental freedoms. It also states that States must ensure that these children receive appropriate assistance according to their disability and age to exercise their right to freely express their views.
