This second edition of the 2022 “Handbook on European Law Relating to the Rights of the Child” has been jointly prepared by the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights and the Council of Europe. It explains key case law, summarizing the main rulings from the Court of Justice of the European Union and the European Court of Human Rights. The handbook is aimed at legal professionals who are not specialized in child law, judges, prosecutors, child protection authorities, and other professionals and organizations responsible for ensuring the legal protection of children’s rights. Chapter 11 provides an overview of European standards regarding children and adolescents (CNA) involved in judicial and alternative procedures, addressing guarantees of a fair trial, including effective participation and access to legal representation, rights in juvenile justice, and the protection of child victims and witnesses.
