Perception of Adolescents Victims of Sexual Offenses About Their Experience in the Criminal Justice System

In 2008, the Amparo y Justicia Foundation requested the Measurement Center of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile (MIDE-UC) to conduct a study on secondary victimization that children and adolescents (CNA), victims of sexual abuse, may experience during their involvement in the criminal justice system. This second study, based on interviews with 62 adolescent victims of sexual abuse from the Metropolitan, Valparaíso, and Bío-Bío regions, aimed to analyze their perceptions of the investigation and judicialization processes as they went through the criminal justice system. The goal was to identify key moments related to secondary victimization. A high correspondence was observed between the perceptions of the interviewed adolescents and their caregivers (first study), revealing that the most poorly evaluated aspects of the judicial process were the reporting, the prosecutor, the physical examinations, and the investigators.
